Cork Clousre

A clousre, or applied finish, is a type of bottle glass that was separately added to the end of a neck after the blowpipe was removed (click forming a flared finish for an illustration).glass clousre The application of this finishing glass performed multiple functions - to strengthen and define the neck bore; to support a cork (and thus the bottles closure); and to act as a means for a rim-to-neck adherence.glass clousre This method of finishing is the precursor to the more sophisticated tooled finishes.

Bottles produced using this early method of finishing can be dated based on the morphology and features of the neck bore, the type of finish formed, and any residual side mold seams present in the finish itself.glass clousre Bottles produced using this method tended to be cruder or bulkier than later, more refined applied finishes and tooled finishes as well as the rolled and flared finish methods discussed below.

In order to form this early finish, the pliable neck bore glass was typically reheated and manipulated with some type(s) of primitive tool(s).glass clousre The resulting rolled or flared finish may be characterized by a rather thick or substantial appearance to the neck (as opposed to the relatively thin finish resulting from the 'burst-off' technique described below).

A common attribute of these 'laid-on ring' finished bottles is a visual line or ridge that can often be felt by inserting one's finger into the neck's bore where the sheared/cracked off glass meets the applied finish glass (click a 'laid-on ring' finish to see an illustration).glass clousre This ridge, or interface, will be pronounced or very visible on most but not all applied finish types as it essentially defines the 'end' of the neck's sheared or cracked-off portion (Deiss 1981).

Aside from exhibiting the above noted attributes, most applied finishes will also have a few to a grouping of small, short fissures or cracks (crazing lines) that are generally concentrated in the area where the sheared/cracked-off finish glass meets the somewhat cooler and more rigid upper neck glass.glass clousre This feature is rarely present on tooled finishes (see the next section). Finally, most applied finishes will exhibit concentric horizontal finishing tooling marks whereas many tooled finish bottles will have these markings fade or disappear as they progress upward from the base of the neck's sheared/cracked-off portion to the upper neck just below the finish area. This latter characteristic clearly identifies bottles produced with the earlier, more primitive, applied finishing method from those produced using the more sophisticated tooled finish methods.
